Toilet Paper Roll Cars

Do your kids love cars?  If they do, you can try making some toilet paper roll cars for an easy activity they will really enjoy.  With a few minutes and some common household items, you have a good do-it-together project that will keep your children busy playing even after the project is done.  And they’re so easy; you’ll have these toilet paper roll cars zooming around the house in no time!  A 5 to 7 year old will be able to do most or all of this project themselves.  For younger ones you can do the cutting and they can do the decorating. Paper roll crafts are good fun, so gather your supplies and get started!

Supplies

  • Toilet paper or paper towel roll – a paper towel roll can make two cars
  • 4in. x 4in. cardboard (from a pad of paper or a food box is good)
  • Four metal brads
  • Stencil or other item to trace for an approximately 2-inch circle
  • Paint, markers, crayons, stickers or whatever you want to decorate the car with
  • Pencil, pen or marker
  • Scissors

Directions:

  1. If you are using a paper towel roll, cut it in half.
  2. Draw a half-circle starting at about an inch from the end of the roll and going toward the middle.  Cut the half-circle and bend it upward for the race car seat.
  3. Trace circles on your cardboard and cut them out for the wheels.   You can make the front ones a little smaller if you want for a more authentic look.
  4. Paint the car body and the wheels. You can make them plain or paint on whatever type of design you want.  Let the paint dry.
  5. Attach the wheels.  Use 1 metal brad and push through the middle of the wheel and through one side of the toilet paper roll, about one inch from the end.  You might want to start a hole with scissors first to make it easier. Repeat for the 3 other wheels.
  6. If you are using stickers or other embellishments, put them on last to make sure nothing will get in the way of the wheels moving.
